FLORENCE — The scoreboard at Braly Stadium might have read South 26, North 14, but in the view of everyone who participated in the inaugural ProGrass International Scout Bowl, everybody was a winner.

Friday night’s game concluded three days of combine work and practices for 81 college and foreign players trying to break through into professional football. And according to George St. Lawrence, founder and CEO of the Collegiate Development Football League, who partnered with ProGrass and EUROstopwatch to promote the game, it was a great success.

“The intensity level from the kids and the coaches was great this week,” St. Lawrence said. “They really appreciated the opportunity to play again.”

It also meant a lot to South head coach Johnny Majors, who choked back a few tears when the team presented him with the game ball after the victory.

“It really was very exciting and a lot of fun,” the 77-year old former Pittsburgh and Tennessee coach said. “It was so invigorating and rewarding to be around all these great players and coaches this week. I really think I got a lot more out of this week than I put in.”

The South statistically dominated the game, gaining 413 yards to the North’s 216 and held North quarterbacks Bobby Cooper and Peter Lalich to a combined 9-of-32 with two interceptions.

The South took a 13-0 halftime lead on two Jose Maltos field goals and a 1-yard quarterback sneak by James Coy.

The North struck back with two big plays in the third quarter to take the lead. The first was a 61-yard touchdown run by Logwone Mitz and the second a 90-yard punt return by Antavian Edison, which gave the North a 14-13 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

But the tide turned back in the favor of the South a few minutes later, when Trent Debraga recovered a fumbled punt at the 3-yard line. Daniel Borne scored on a 1-yard touchdown run four plays later and the South had the lead back for good.

The South put the game away when Khiry Robinson rushed 42 yards to the 1-yard line and then scored himself two plays later with 3:05 remaining.

Former coach and ESPN broadcaster Mike Gottfried, who coached the South quarterbacks, said he couldn’t have been prouder of not only his players, but the North players as well.

“The players really had a passion for this,” Gottfried said. “This game gave these players a chance to play one more game, and who knows what will come of this? One of these days, the MVP of the Super Bowl might have come from this game.”

Two local players who got a chance to play were former North Alabama running back Wes Holland and long snapper Josh Roberts. Holland had five carries for 28 yards and caught three passes for 12 yards.

“It was nice to get another game here at Braly Stadium,” Holland said.

“This is just the next step for me to get to the next level, either in the NFL or CFL. I had a lot of fun this week, meeting new guys and seeing how I stack up against them.”

The game was such a success, that St. Lawrence said he wants to bring it back to Florence next year as well.

“We’re most definitely interested in doing the game here again,” St. Lawrence said. “Everyone was very hospitable and really welcomed us. I think this year was great, but next year will be even better.”

APMG SPORTS AND THE NFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION PRESENT PROFESSIONAL AMERICAN FOOTBALL GAME IN CHINA ON MAY 4, 2013 IN BEIJING

Grammy ® Award-winner Darius Rucker to perform at the “China-USA Friendship Game” event in May to celebrate 40 years of China-US diplomatic and cultural relations alongside the Nixon Foundation

APMG Sports, in conjunction with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) and other diplomatic and business partners including the Richard Nixon Foundation, announce today that an American football game featuring professional players in China will take place at the National Olympic Stadium in Beijing on May 4, 2013 at 5 pm.

In addition to the historic “China-USA Friendship Game” exhibition football contest between teams consisting of current and former professional American football players and coaches, as well as Chinese players, the event will include a concert performance by American superstar singer and Grammy ® Award-winner Darius Rucker, front man for Hootie and the Blowfish, who will perform before the game and also on a field stage following the game.

Several other significant ceremonies leading up to the game and concert will highlight the historic 1972 diplomatic meeting between Chinese Chairman Mao Zedong and US President Richard Nixon, which forever changed global people-to-people relations. A delegation from the Nixon Foundation and participating dignitaries, football players, and coaches will be hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) for various events, culminating in a reception at the Great Hall of the People on May 3, 2013. Other cultural and sporting activities will be included during the period of several days leading to the event, in conjunction with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CPAFFC, the US Department of State, World Team Sports China, the China-US Sports Friendship Association, Starbridge Media Group, and various other Chinese and American diplomatic and business entities.

The delegation will include National Football League player Ed Wang, currently under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Wang is of Chinese ancestry and his parents were elite athletes in China. Other leading sports and political figures (including Pro Football Hall of Fame member Floyd Little) will accompany the American delegation from Washington to Beijing in early May.

“It is a distinct honor and privilege to work with the NFLPA and the people of China in bringing this historic event to Beijing,” said APMG Sports Founder/President John Glavin.“We look forward to exciting and lasting people-to-people exchanges of sports and culture of this type for many years to come.”

Added NFLPA spokesperson George Atallah: “The NFL Players Association appreciates the opportunity that the people of China are providing our organization in welcoming us as ambassadors of professional American football in China. We are looking forward to developing many Chinese football fans and players for many years to come.”

On behalf of the Nixon Foundation, the group’s President, Sandy Quinn, said: “It is fitting to play an American football game during the Nixon Foundation’s trip to China in celebration of President Nixon’s many contributions to fostering China-US relations. President Nixon was a great fan of the sport, especially during his time in The White House. We look forward to the opportunity to continue his legacy of people-to-people exchange in this unique manner.”

President Nixon’s daughter, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, said: “To my father, football was a metaphor for life. He knew, as every football coach also knows, that nothing worth achieving can be accomplished without tireless effort, concentrated focus, and a clear vision of the goal. The China US Friendship Game is a wonderful metaphor for the relationship that has developed between our two countries. Over four decades we have kept our sights on building a more peaceful, more prosperous future for both the American and Chinese people. Like the score at the end of a game, the results speak for themselves.”

President Nixon’s brother, Ed Nixon, added: “I have never known anyone who loved football more than my brother did. He would be so pleased to know that this game is being played in China to help mark his historic visit in 1972 to the People’s Republic of China.”

US Colonel Jack Brennan visited China as aide to President Nixon several times. He added: “When I accompanied the President and Mrs. Nixon to China in 1972, and again in 1976 and 1979, I would never have imagined that one day Beijing would host an American football game. The effects of that historic visit in 1972 – the week that changed the world – are still being felt today, more than 40 years later.”

Ken Hutman of Starbridge Media Group, Inc. and the China-US Sports Friendship Association, advisor to APMG Sports, noted: “The Friendship Game will highlight the best use of sports and culture as thematic backdrops to promote relevant people-to-people exchanges between China and the US. Celebrating American football on Chinese soil in conjunction with the Nixon Foundation will make for an historic event.”

Superstar performer Darius Rucker added: “It is an honor to be a part of this historic celebration of American football in Beijing. I look forward to representing true American football and music fans as part of this game.”

Additional details regarding team rosters, coaches, ticket sales, broadcast schedules, photo opportunities, press conferences and related events are forthcoming. Other information regarding the China-USA Friendship Game can be found on the APMG Sports website at www.apmgsports.com .

UNA will host the first ProGrass International Scout Bowl at Braly Stadium March 15, 2013, as was announced in a press conference at the Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa today.

ProGrass, the Collegiate Development Football League and EUROstopwatch have come together to sponsor the event. It is the sponsors’ hope to continue the event annually.

“We feel very fortunate to be able to have this game in the Shoals area,” said George St. Lawrence, founder of the CDFL.

The game will feature top professional prospects from a variety of places – from the Shoals’ own back yard to countries around the world. The players will be mentored by legendary coaches such as Sherman Lewis, Mike Gottfried and Bob Valesente.

“It’s amazing just to hear those names,” said Francisco Lujan, Director of Operations for EUROstopwatch.

The event will be televised, according to Lujan, though they are still working with CSS, NBC and Spike TV to determine which channel will stream it.

In the days leading up to the game, the players will participate in a combine on March12, daily practices, a community event and a banquet, said UNA Athletic Director Mark Linder.

Lujan said they are looking at bringing in players from Mexico, Canada, India, France, Austria and South Africa. He also said they also want to include free agents who have already graduated, to give them a second chance.

That includes, according to Lawrence, a familiar face from UNA.

“Wes (Holland, who graduated from UNA last spring) is on the board.”

Lujan explained that they want to bring in players from around the world because football has been growing internationally, and, he predicts, may one day become an Olympic sport.

The sponsors also plan to bring in players from all divisions, including SEC players. Since this event will occur after many pro-days and senior bowls, St. Lawrence and Lujan said they look at this bowl as a second chance for many players.

“One of the mottos we have is that we believe student athletes deserve a second chance to make a first impression,”St.Lawrence said.

Lujan pointed out that there are many talented players never seen by scouts because they don’t play at schools such as Alabama or Auburn.

“There’s so many talented athletes out there, and the thing is, not all of them are playing (for big teams), they’re playing right here in your backyard,” said Lujan.

The weekend will be full of football in the Shoals area, with the UNA football team hosting its annual spring scrimmage game the following morning at Braly.

“We’ll have a great football weekend, and on top of that, we have a double header in baseball the next day against UAH,” Linder said.
